first post :)

Okay, so we’re here with a first post. You’re probably wondering what’s the point of this post, what’s the point of this blog?

Welp, if you would like to know why I’m starting a blog, it is in response to a traumatic experience that I brought onto myself. I don’t care to broadcast it to the world but if you are reading this and feel like sending me a message I might feel entitled to scare you off with my villain origin story.

“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been”

-David Bowie

Bowie has always been a personal favorite of mine. This quote in particular stands out for its exact phrasing. Not the person you want to be, but the person you SHOULD be. To me, it seems obvious that ageing is an opportunity to become who you want to be but the shift to who you should be is a sort of societal pressure beyond the self that asks you to be a better person for the sake of all, instead of purely focusing on a egocentric desire to be who you want to be. Because who do you want to be? Cool? Rich? Admired? Loved for who you truly are? But who should you be? Probably like a volunteer firefighter who donates all of their disposable income to help displaced people in Gaza. Probably someone who volunteers at the soup kitchen regularly, a social worker, someone who gives blood regularly. Someone who is on the National Marrow Donor Program registry so they can increase the chances of saving someone else’s life. Everyone has their personal ideas of who they should be.

Sources report this quote comes from an interview with Aaron Hicklin for Gear magazine, 1999. I have not been able to confirm this outside of Out.com but I trust wikiquotes.

This is all to say I have had an unlucky 3 weeks. I got knocked down by life and now I need to give myself a new hairstyle to get over that ex. But instead of opting for a new hairstyle, I’ve decided to hunker down and become the person I always should have been (more so than I already am). I’ve been hit with that middle of the night motivation to change my life and I’ve decided a blog is the best way to do that for some reason.

The purpose of this blog, in simple terms, is to make the world a better place. How will I do this? I will take steps to have a positive effect on my environment, report my findings, and do research to give you cost effective methods to support your local community and the world as a whole.

I will be starting with a lifelong goal to regularly donate blood. I have always been scared of needles so I have been ignoring this one simple way to help my community. I am no longer scared of needles but I also just haven’t been able to justify the 24 hours afterwards where you are not able to do anything. But I have scheduled my first blood draw for Feb 10th (I think) and I will report back with how the experience goes.

I have a list of blog ideas including a couple movie reviews, a couple sleeping tips, maybe some music recommendations. Obviously I will have a focus on donating, volunteering, and others ways you can help in your community.

For my next post, I will make an outline of rules for myself. How often I will post, things I can and cannot post about and whatnot. If you are reading this, I hope you are doing good, and if you are not reading this, I hope you are doing better.
